A power of attorney is a legal document where you can name a person to act on your behalf.  We do not recommend you name one person to act as you in all aspects: financially and medically.  A person who is granted total power fails under the term general power of attorney.  We personally are more comfortable with the power being broken up between two people: one person as your medical power of attorney and another person as your financial power of attorney.  The reason we are more comfortable having the power divided is that it prevents the acting attorney from reallocating your finances and then pulling the plug on you.

Both attorneys should have durable powers.  Durable power means that they have the authority to act on your behalf right now, not upon you becoming incapacitated.  Durable power eliminates any possible delays.  If they are not durable power, than they are automatically springing power.  Springing power means that they spring into power once the court system has been given proof that you are incapacitated.
